Hanauma Bay Videconference

Thursday, April 24, 2008   (0 Comments)
Lower school students gathered in the Loft on April 2 to meet in real time with education specialists at Hanauma Bay, Hawaii.

Gini Moore, Burgundy's technology assistant, arranged this special event. Gini, who lived in Hawaii for a time, traveled to Hawaii to set up the videoconference with the staff at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve on Oahu. She greeted the assembled students with a warm "Aloha from Hawaii."

Using iChat, lower school students were able to see and talk to the education staff in Hawaii. Underwater photographer Larry Winnik joined the Hanauma Bay staff to talk about his experiences and observations.

Burgundy students lined up to ask questions like, "How big are ocean sponges? Have you ever seen one big enough to hold a person?" or "What species in Hanauma Bay are endangered?"

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, one of the most spectacular natural resources in Hawaii, is reaping the benefits of over a decade of moves to re-establish its pristine marine ecosystem. The culmination of the protection and preservation efforts are the major upper and lower bay facility improvements, the heart of which is the award-winning Marine Education Center, that opened in August 2002. Hanauma now has a site where its education program flourishes.

Not a “beach park” for beach sport, but a Nature Preserve dedicated to safeguarding
the fragile marine life in the Bay, Hanauma is the first Marine Life Conservation District in the State.
